Lib Dems Call for Means Testing of Brown Bin Charges in East Herts

From April 1st 2021, East Herts Council is introducing a chargeable garden waste service with an annual charge of £49.

At Full Council on January 13th, East Herts Liberal Democrat councillors pushed hard for there to be concession rates for those on low incomes. We are very concerned that this charge will leave many people unable to dispose of their garden waste.

Though we undertand that the Council's finances are stretched, we called for this charge to be deferred as it did not include separate provision for food waste, would be bad for the environment and lacked any concessions for residents who are unable to meet this cost.

Having to choose between feeding your family and clearing your garden so you can enjoy it should never be necessary. Though our requests at Full Council were not supported, we will continue to push for change.
