Mark Argent

Our candidate in the General Election on 8 June 2017 is Mark Argent.

He works in design and IT and was very involved in establishing and running the East of England Faiths Council, which involved building connections between regional governance, faith and voluntary bodies.

He is a regular contibutor to Liberal Democrat Voice, has written for Independent Voices and blogs on politics at markargent.com/blog.

Mark writes: "Brexit is the backdrop to the 2017 General Election. The referendum on the UK's membership of the European Union was deeply flawed because there were no plans for leaving. It was an attempt by David Cameron to call the bluff of his opponents in the Conservative party. If it had been a serious attempt at democracy, then we would have been offered clear plans for remaining and leaving which people could chose between. The Liberal Democrat position is that, when the government finally works out what being outside the European Union will look like, then the public should be offered a vote on whether that is actually preferable to remaining in the EU.

"Brexit is already having a serious effect on prices in the shops and public finances. We need to address some of these things urgently so that there is money for the NHS and social care. We need to reverse the proposed cuts to education because it is only through good education that we can compete in a globalised world."

Mark's key campaign priorities are:

  • Oppose hard Brexit
  • More money for the NHS, raised by increasing Income Tax by one percentage point
  • Reverse Tory cuts to schools
