Local LibDems continue to have reservations regarding the revised design proposals by Hendersons for the redevelopment of the Council offices and the Causeway car park (Old River Lane development).

Hendersons have listened to the comments from the Town Council, the Civic Federation, the Chamber of Commerce and the public. Although some of the building heights have been lowered there are still worries regarding the height and bulk of some of the buildings.

The Cinema, it seems, is badly named and gives a wrong impression of the facility. As we understand it, it is actually a complex of meeting rooms with presentation and video conferencing areas plus a small bar and cafe. The hope is that, from time to time, it will be able to work closely with the Rhodes Arts Complex for special Arts Events in the town.

The LibDems are still concerned that, by extending the retail area into the Causeway complex, the town centre would move further northwards away from the present centre and (already suffering with some retail closures) the lower South Street area, .

Hendersons' latest proposals can been seen on the District Council's website at http://www.eastherts.gov.uk/media/pdf/r/c/Old_River_Lane_Initial_Development_Brief.pdf
